Kisan Credit Card Loan Limit: On February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the 2025 Budget, placing a strong emphasis on supporting farmers, youth, the poor, and women. One of the key highlights is the introduction of the ‘GYAN’ initiative, which stands for growth in youth, empowerment of women, and providing support to food providers and the underprivileged. Among the numerous announcements, the government raised the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) limit, a significant move aimed at aiding farmers.

What is the Kisan Credit Card (KCC)?

The Kisan Credit Card (KCC) was launched in 1988 as a joint effort by the Government of India, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and NABARD. This scheme provides farmers with easy access to loans at low-interest rates, helping them cover costs for seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other farming essentials.

Who Can Apply for the KCC?

The KCC is open to all farmers actively involved in agriculture. This includes landowners, tenant farmers, oral lessees, and even sharecroppers. Additionally, farmers in Self Help Groups (SHGs) or Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) are eligible to apply.

KCC Key Features

The KCC offers farmers a variety of convenient features:

  • Direct Transactions: Farmers can buy inputs and receive earnings directly into their bank accounts.
  • Magnetic Stripe Card: The card comes with a PIN for added security.
  • ATM Access: It works at ATMs and micro ATMs across all banks.
  • International Standards: The card is issued by Europay, MasterCard, or VISA.
  • Aadhaar-Linking: Some banks also offer Aadhaar-linked debit cards for biometric authentication.

KCC Limit Raised: A Big Move for Farmers

One of the standout announcements in the Budget was the increase in the KCC limit. It has been raised from ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh, enabling farmers to borrow more at lower interest rates. This move is expected to provide more financial freedom for farmers to invest in their crops and farming infrastructure.

Other Key Announcements for Farmers

In addition to the KCC changes, several initiatives were announced to further support farmers:

  • Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhanya Yojana: Approximately 1.7 crore farmers will benefit from this scheme, particularly those in regions with low agricultural production.
  • Loan Facility for Dairy and Fisheries: To boost the dairy and fisheries sectors, farmers can now avail loans of up to ₹5 lakh at lower interest rates.
  • Formation of Makhana Board: The government will set up a Makhana Board to support farmers in Bihar. This board will help with market access and government assistance for Makhana (fox nuts) production.

Simplifying Transactions for Farmers

The KCC also aims to streamline transactions at mandis and procurement centers. With the card, farmers can sell their produce and have the earnings directly credited to their bank accounts, making financial transactions more efficient.

In conclusion, these announcements reflect the government’s focus on improving the livelihoods of farmers and encouraging agricultural development. The increase in the KCC limit, along with additional schemes, is set to strengthen the agriculture sector and provide farmers with the resources they need to succeed.
